Everyone should have a killer powder room. It is the one room your guests will see, so make an impact. Here is a friend’s powder room, which I completely adore. This small eclectic space mixes old and new--the modern white fixtures combined with a vintage brass and crystal chandelier and art deco mirror create a little jewel box . I love the way she placed a large painting, my “Flower Girl II," in a tiny space. The lovely eccentric rug from Anthropologie complements the painting and ties the room together.
If you are think of sprucing up an old powder room, consider interesting wallpaper or a vibrant dark paint color. A powder room is your opportunity to go wild! Embrace the drama!!
These are some of the powder rooms that I love and find inspiration from!
I am crazy about vintage ethnic hemp pillows. These textiles are handwoven and hand-dyed by women of the Hmong Hill Tribe, an ethnic minority group of the highlands in the north of Thailand (the mountainous regions of China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand). I also like the shibori hand-dyed fabrics. Shibori is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique, which produces patterns by folding and twisting fabric.
At some point, I would like to create my own textiles but for this DIY, I am using found and bought fabrics.
INSPIRATION FOR HMONG TRIBAL PILLOW
INSPIRATION FOR SHIBORI PILLOW
For the first pillow, I purchased 2.5 yards of Thai Hmong Indigo from Native Arts Treasures on Etsy. I centered fabric over a white linen and cut fabric into an 18 inch square. I used a coordinating denim fabric for the back. Sewed both sides together, add insert and hand stitched pillow closed. Tip: I like to use an insert one to two inches larger for a fuller look.
My second pillow, is made of shibori scraps I found while rummaging through my upholsterer's remnants. I sewed the pieces together to form a pattern. I used the same coordinating denim for the back as I used for the first pillow.
I think they turned out great and look fantastic in my family room.

This lovely rocker has been reupholstered with a large ikat patterned fabric and a contrasting navy linen for piping detail and backing. My clients are thrilled with their newly revived heirloom.
